About the Author

Brent P. Randall is a licensed Civil Engineer with bachelor's and master's degrees from Utah State University. His career spans geotechnical consulting in the Pacific Northwest and a specialized role in geotechnical instrumentation at Campbell Scientific. He has played a key role in major instrumentation projects worldwide, including the Mosul Dam.

Beyond his technical expertise, Brent is passionate about education and knowledge sharing. Across the globe, he has conducted training sessions and delivered instrumentation lectures. This passion ultimately led him to write this book.

The idea for this project began as a comparison exercise—creating a table of contents alongside Geotechnical Instrumentation for Monitoring Field Performance by John Dunnicliff. However, Brent soon realized that the industry lacked comprehensive documentation on automation in geotechnical instrumentation. Recognizing this gap, he set out to compile the best practices for automated instrumentation to benefit practitioners in the field.

This book was written independently but with encouragement from leading manufacturers in the industry, including Campbell Scientific, Durham Geo Slope Indicator (DGSI), GEOKON, Measurand, Roctest, RST Instruments, and others.
